More can be done to help disabled people into work, claims expert

21 Feb 2012

IT recruiters, companies and other employment bodies could be doing much more to ensure that disabled people are fairly represented in the workplace according to Karen Jackson, solicitor and managing partner at didlaw.

Ms Jackson claimed that companies could be the main reason behind the problem, stating that "employers do not want to manage people with ill health and disabilities".

Government plans outlined recently would see the long-term sick and disabled forced to work unpaid for an unlimited amount of time or have their benefits cut, a move which Ms Jackson describes as "abhorrent".

Ms Jackson added: "I think the government's focus is wrong. Our society should be trying to empower disabled people and reintegrating them into the workforce."

The case has been hot on the political agenda recently, with MPs saying that the government must ensure new welfare assessments planned for disabled people are accurate and fair before being rolled out nationally.
