Controlling personal devices almost impossible in the workplace

Controlling personal devices almost impossible in the workplace

26 Jan 2012

The vice president of marketing EMEA at Blue Coat Systems has suggested that businesses are no longer capable of controlling the use of consumer devices by their employees with jobs in IT and other roles.

According to Nigel Hawthorn, it is almost too late for companies to halt the use of personal devices by their employees thanks to low prices and the merging of professional and personal life.

He suggested it was nearly impossible for companies to achieve this although one option would be manage and limit bandwidth so that only company-approved devices are rewarded with higher end performance.

Mr Hawthorn said: "These sorts of devices now are coming down in price to the point where many people will want to buy and use their own devices that they're used to using at home - most people have no problem with using them for home and business purposes."

Recently, a poll of 100 IT directors at large UK businesses by Damovo UK, found that 76 per cent believed the consumerisation of IT is an 'over-hyped' phenomenon.
